In November 2021, we embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Maldives, a dream destination that had long been on our travel wishlist. Our partnership with Kuoni, renowned for their expertise in Indian Ocean travels, led us to one of their most exclusive and sought-after islands: Kuramathi.
Kuramathi Island, known for its diverse accommodation styles, gourmet dining options, and serene spa facilities, stretches approximately 1 kilometre from end to end. Its allure had already captivated Ben’s parents the previous year, and they were excited to share its wonders with us.
Based in London, our adventure began at London Heathrow, where we boarded an Emirates flight to Dubai, and then onward to the Maldives. Embracing the ethos of luxury from the start, we travelled in business class, setting the tone for the indulgent and stylish 10 nights that awaited us at the resort.
Choosing to stay for 10 nights, we opted for a Thundi Water Villa on the select all-inclusive package. This exquisite accommodation offered us not just a room, but an experience - where the azure waters of the Indian Ocean were just a step away from our private deck.

Journeying in Style: Our Route to Relaxation
Our journey to relaxation began right from our doorstep, thanks to Emirates Business Class's exceptional chauffeur service. Imagine being whisked away in a sleek Mercedes, complete with climate control, ensuring a comfortable and stylish ride to the airport. This door-to-door service is a hallmark of Emirates' commitment to excellence and a perfect precursor to a luxury holiday.
Our brief stop in Dubai was nothing short of seamless. The opportunity to freshen up in the lounge, complete with shower facilities, was a welcome luxury. We were able to enjoy some food on the ground and a couple of glass of wine from the exquisite wine selection, including one of Hugh's favourites, Puligny Montrachet.
For those transiting through Dubai, it's worth noting that you can pay to access both the Emirates Business and First Class lounges. These lounges offer extensive facilities that can help break up your journey as well as adding an extra layer of comfort and luxury to your journey.
Our arrival in Malé was the gateway to the final leg of our journey to Kuramathi. We opted for the seaplane transfer to the island, a choice that combines breathtaking views with efficiency. While there is a speedboat alternative, it tends to be longer and can be affected by weather conditions. The seaplane does have luggage limitations, but for a small surcharge, you can ensure all your belongings fly with you. Alternatively, luggage can be sent separately via speedboat at no extra cost, and the diligent Kuramathi team at the airport will ensure it safely reaches your room later that day.
Arrival: First Glimpses of Paradise
Our approach to Kuramathi was nothing short of magical, aboard the seaplane that skimmed over a tapestry of islands scattered like jewels across the Indian Ocean. The excitement built as we played a guessing game, trying to identify Kuramathi from above. It stood out as the elongated island, just a bit hidden in the photograph, with its lush greenery and fringed shores.
The experience of landing on water is thrillingly unique. Our plane gracefully circled the island, searching for the perfect spot on the shimmering sea to touch down. The moment we landed, gliding smoothly to a stop at a floating pontoon, was like a scene from a movie. From there, we stepped onto a small boat for the final stretch to the island, a journey that was both exhilarating and serene.
As soon as our feet touched Kuramathi, we were enveloped in an overwhelming sense of peace and remoteness. The clear blue waters around us sparkled under the sun, inviting us into a world where time slows down. The hustle of everyday life felt like a distant memory as we embraced the island's tranquil embrace.
Our days were now set to a rhythm of simplicity and bliss: eat, sleep, read, drink. The routine was as soothing as it was luxurious. The welcome was warm and genuine, complete with refreshing welcome drinks. The check-in process was a breeze, signaling the start of our dream vacation.
Kuramathi, with its considerable size, offers a convenient buggy service to whisk guests and their luggage to their accommodations. Of course, there's always the option to stroll along the sandy paths, a delightful experience where the soft sand caresses your feet. Walking these paths is an invitation to connect with the island's natural beauty at your own pace.

Thundi Water Villa: A Serene Overwater Retreat
Our stay in the Thundi Water Villa was an experience in understated luxury. The villa, adorned with all the modern amenities one could wish for, offered an enchanting blend of comfort and style. While the in-room mini-bar was not part of the all-inclusive package, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Anticipating a refreshing Frozen Daiquiri became a delightful reason to visit the bar later, adding a touch of extra excitement to our evenings.
The villa's pool and deck area were a highlight, offering generous space to relax and unwind. The private steps leading directly into the sea added a unique touch, making snorkeling excursions effortlessly intimate. There’s a special kind of privacy and joy in having your own secluded access to the tranquil blue waters.
As evening descended, the true charm of the bi-fold windows was revealed. Immersing in a soothing bath while gazing out at the ocean, with the sun setting on the horizon, was an experience of unparalleled tranquility and beauty.
Our curiosity led us to explore various room categories within the resort. The traditional water villas, in particular, caught our attention. Offering the quintessential overwater living experience, these villas come with the added luxury of a hot tub on the terrace.
The impeccable service provided by our room steward was a testament to the resort's commitment to excellence. Each day, we were greeted with artistically crafted bed art, showcasing both creativity and attention to detail. While beautiful and imaginative, we found that the charm of this artistic touch was in its fleeting nature, creating a fresh canvas each evening as we prepared for rest.
Culinary Delights: Savoring Every Bite at Kuramathi
The culinary offerings at Kuramathi are, without a doubt, a standout highlight. It's not an exaggeration to say that the food alone, even without the enchanting setting and sun-drenched days, would be enough to leave us utterly content.
With the select all-inclusive plan, our culinary journey was as diverse as it was delightful. We had the pleasure of dining in one of eight different restaurants each evening, three choices for lunch, and a sumptuous breakfast buffet that set the tone for the day. The quality and variety at the breakfast buffet were so impressive that, despite our usual aversion to buffet-style dining, we found ourselves eagerly anticipating it each morning.
Lunch was a test of restraint, knowing the culinary treasures that awaited us at dinner. We often found ourselves basking in the relaxed atmosphere of the Italian restaurant, sipping on bottles of crisp Italian white wine, savoring fresh fish, and relishing our escape from the bustle of everyday life.
Each dinner was a new adventure, a testament to the resort's exceptional culinary standards. We had the opportunity to experience each restaurant, and not once did we encounter anything less than extraordinary. Hugh’s personal favorite was the Tandoor Mahal, where the vibrant flavors and expertly crafted dishes left a lasting impression, despite the unusual seating arrangements. For Ben, the Reef restaurant stood out with its exquisitely fresh fish and stunning architectural ambiance.
Unwinding at the Spa and Exploring Island Facilities
Our quest for relaxation led us to the splendid spa at Kuramathi. Surrendering to the skilled hands of the therapists, we indulged in a 60-minute massage that was the epitome of de-stressing. While it was a bit on the pricey side, the experience was quintessentially Maldivian – think overwater treatment rooms where you can gaze through glass panels in the floor at the tranquil waters below, enhancing the serene ambience.
Before leaving the UK, we wisely invested in some basic snorkeling gear from Amazon, which proved invaluable for exploring the vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life that fringe the villa. For those who prefer to travel light, the resort offers complimentary snorkeling equipment. And for the more adventurous, there are organized deep-sea diving excursions that circumnavigate the island, revealing the underwater wonders of the Maldives.
Traveling without children, we didn’t experience the childcare facilities firsthand, but our fleeting glimpses from the buggy revealed a setup that was clearly more than just paddling pools and crayons. It appeared that children visiting the island would be in for a treat, with thoughtful and engaging care provided.
The resort houses two shops – one stocked with souvenirs, snacks, and essentials, and the other offering a surprisingly chic range of clothing. Browsing these shops added a pleasant dimension to our stay, with each offering unique finds and mementos.
One comforting aspect of Kuramathi is its comprehensive medical facilities. Knowing that medical care is readily available on this self-contained island adds an extra layer of reassurance to the entire experience.
Kuramathi: Exceeding Expectations
Kuramathi may be rated as a 4-star resort, but it effortlessly exceeds each of these well-deserved stars. While the enchanting location, idyllic weather, and innate tranquility are Maldivian standards, it's the unique offerings and exceptional execution that set Kuramathi apart. The resort truly shines in its culinary delights and impeccable service. The memory of savoring Spiny lobster at the Island BBQ and indulging in fresh fish at the Reef restaurant has us yearning to return.
Our journey with Emirates was nothing short of a breeze, setting a high bar for comfort and convenience. The simple joy of walking barefoot on the island for ten days was transformative, altering our perception of shoes and, in a way, of luxury itself.
For us, luxury was redefined on this trip. It wasn't just about indulgence; it was about unwinding in style and finding serenity in simplicity. We unanimously agree that our goal to relax in luxury was not just met, but surpassed. Would we return to Kuramathi? Unequivocally, yes. Would we change anything about our experience? Absolutely not – and for us, that's a rarity!
